Becoming a Member
We'd love for you to become a part of our LUMC family.
Are you interested in learning more about what it means to be a member of Laingsburg United Methodist Church? We'd love for you to become a part of our LUMC family. Membership is a way of saying, "This is my church home," and of committing to grow in faith alongside a community that will pray for you, support you and serve with you.
How to Become a Member
- Reach out. Begin by sending a message through our contact page or by speaking with the pastor after Sunday worship. Let us know you would like to learn more about membership.
- Have a short conversation. You will be invited to talk with the pastor to learn a little more and to get the details on how you'll actually become a member. This meeting only lasts about 15–20 minutes. You can meet after the worship service on Sunday morning, or set up an appointment time that works for you.
- Join during worship. New members are typically welcomed during a Sunday worship service, where the congregation promises to support you in your journey of faith.
What Membership Means in the United Methodist Church
When people join a United Methodist congregation, they promise to be loyal to Christ through the church and to support it with their prayers, presence, gifts, service and witness. These simple promises describe a way of life rather than a list of rules:
- Prayers – praying for one another and for the ministry of the church.
- Presence – showing up for worship, fellowship and learning, in person or online.
- Gifts – sharing financially as you are able; see our stewardship page.
- Service – using your time and talents, from the Food Bank to the choir.
- Witness – letting your life point others toward God's love.
If you have not been baptized, the pastor will be glad to talk with you about baptism as part of joining the church. You can read more on our Being Baptized page. People who are already baptized members of another Christian church can usually transfer their membership.
Not Ready Yet? That's Okay
You never need to be a member to worship with us, take Communion, join a Bible study or serve in our community ministries. Many people attend for a while before deciding to join. Explore our ministries, visit a small group, or read how to choose a church home as you discern where God is leading you.
We look forward to having you as a part of the LUMC family.
